Day 1 Convective Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0134 PM CST Mon Dec 18 2017

Valid 182000Z - 191200Z

...NO SEVERE THUNDERSTORM AREAS FORECAST...

...SUMMARY...
Widely scattered thunderstorms may occur from parts of Texas to
southern Georgia this evening and mostly Texas tonight.

...Discussion...

Only minor adjustments have been made to previous forecast.

..Dial.. 12/18/2017

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1030 AM CST Mon Dec 18 2017/

...Synopsis/Forecast...
A split large-scale pattern will exist over the CONUS and adjacent
Mexico and Canada, highlighted by a progressive belt of westerlies
over the northern tier of the CONUS/southern Canada and a
slow-moving upper low over the Southwest States and northern Mexico.
Severe thunderstorms are unlikely today owing to a combination of
limited buoyancy and regimes influenced by weak forcing for
ascent/vertical shear.

Multiple bands of convection, ongoing across parts of the central
Gulf Coast states near a stalled front, may produce sporadic
lightning today as they continue east-northeastward toward the
coastal Southeast.

Later today, the upstream trough currently over southern AZ and
northwest Mexico will slowly continue to progress eastward and
increasingly influence parts of TX tonight. Trough-preceding
warm/moist advection is likely to result in an increase of showers
and some thunderstorms, particularly late tonight across
central/southern into east TX.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Omaha/Valley NE
324 PM CST Mon Dec 18 2017

.SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Friday)
Issued at 310 PM CST Mon Dec 18 2017

...Wintry weather expected later this week with much colder
temperatures into the Christmas weekend...

A couple more dry/mild days are expected with nearly zonal flow
aloft keeping temperatures 10-15 degrees above normal for this time
of year. All eyes then turn to the southeastward progression of
an upper-level low currently off the southern coast of Alaska. The
upper-level low rounds the Four Corners region early Thursday
with the associated lee surface cyclone drifting east across
Kansas.

Ahead of the approaching low/trough, low-level warm/moist advection
will be increasing with drizzle or possibly light rain beginning as
early as Wednesday night and continuing into early Thursday morning.
As a mid-level frontogenetic circulation increases throughout
early Thursday, precipitation looks to become increasingly steady
with rain or drizzle the predominant type into early Thursday
morning. By 12z, the cold air will begin to dive south out of the
Plains, turning any drizzle over to periods of freezing drizzle
before turning to freezing rain, and eventually changing all over
to snow. As it stands right now, timing for the change over from
liquid to a mix of freezing rain at KOFK would be around mid-
morning, at KOMA and KLNK around late afternoon and at FNB around
early evening Thursday. An hour or two of the mix will then be
followed by a change over to all snow. QPF amounts through 00z
Friday are running anywhere from a few hundredths of an inch at
KFNB to near 0.15" along the Neb/South Dakota border. Of concern
and something to keep a close eye on is a potential 2nd band of
higher QPF that the 12z GFS has extending from Columbus to Harlan,
IA by 06z Fri. The ECMWF also has this band, but the axis is
farther north along the Neb/SD border. Snow ratios should be much
higher in this band as we will be deeper into the cold air. This
could add a few more inches to the forecast depending on where/if
this secondary band develops. Total ice accumulations look to be
under a tenth of an inch with the heaviest axis extending along a
line from Albion to Norfolk and Wayne. This of course may change
over the next few days.

In addition to the falling precipitation, north/northwest winds
will gust to near 30kts through the day Thursday. Million-dollar
question is just how rapidly the ground/road/elevated surface
temperatures will be able to cool to allow accumulations of
ice/snow on said structures. Details on these factors will
hopefully become more clear as we get closer to Thursday.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Monday)
Issued at 310 PM CST Mon Dec 18 2017

The upper trough axis is forecast to clear the area by Friday with
another upper-level trough digging across the western states and
rounding the Four Corners region by Sunday. This allows 850mb temps
to dip into the negative teens from at least Saturday through
Christmas Day. According to the 12Z ECMWF, this later upper
trough paints a stripe of snow across our southern CWA on Saturday
with fairly light QPF amounts while the GFS remains dry. Of note,
the GFS remains much colder as well, bringing a slug of close to
-30C 850mb air into the area.

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon)
Issued at 1110 AM CST Mon Dec 18 2017

Expect VFR conditions through the forecast period, with mainly
just high clouds. Winds will be mainly from the west or southwest
until later tonight, except winds at KOMA will probably become
south this evening. A cold front will push through the region,
turning winds to the northwest and then to the north.
